It is a loudspeaker tested and certified to EN54-24 for use in life-safety voice alarm (PAVA) systems. In a fire or evacuation it must stay intelligible and keep the circuit intact. Shopping centres, airports, hospitals, schools, hotels and large offices are typical sites.
A standard BGM speaker is not certified for fire conditions. EN54-24 models add the construction and testing needed for evacuation use — typically metal parts, ceramic terminals, thermal fuses and, on ceiling types, a fire dome. Using uncertified speakers can break system approval.
PAVA is Public Address Voice Alarm: one system that can play background music and paging in normal use, then switch to pre-recorded or live evacuation messages in an emergency. EN54-24 loudspeakers are the speaker half of that system; the amplifiers, messages and cause-and-effect must also meet the relevant fire standards.
The dome helps protect the ceiling void if the speaker is exposed to fire, so flame and smoke are less likely to pass through the cut-out. It is a common requirement on flush voice-alarm ceilings. Cabinet, projector and pendant VA speakers use other certified constructions instead of a dome.
Ceramic terminal blocks and thermal fuses are specified so a speaker that fails in a fire is more likely to leave the rest of the loudspeaker circuit working. That supports the “integrity” part of a voice-alarm design. Do not swap them for standard plastic connectors.
Yes. Almost all EN54-24 loudspeakers in this range are 100V line so many speakers can share a monitored circuit. Set taps to the design SPL, add the load, and leave amplifier and battery headroom as required by the voice-alarm panel.
Many certified speakers are used for day-to-day PA and BGM as well as evacuation, which avoids fitting two grids of speakers. Music quality varies by format: two-way cabinets sound more natural than small paging projectors. Emergency intelligibility still takes priority over hi-fi.
Yes. Selected projectors, horns and cabinets are IP-rated for platforms, car parks and other semi-exposed routes. Indoor ceiling speakers with fire domes are not automatically weatherproof. Treat EN54-24 and IP rating as two separate ticks on the specification.
