A paging mic is a desk or gooseneck microphone for live announcements over a commercial PA. Staff use one in shops, schools, offices, warehouses, leisure venues and transport hubs so messages override the background music and are heard in the right areas.
A handheld is for speech or singing into a mixer. A paging microphone is built for PA: press-to-talk, often zone buttons, and a base that sits on a reception desk. It is designed to talk to a mixer-amp or voice-alarm system, not to be carried on stage.
The announcement is live only while the button is held (or latched, on some stations). That stops empty desk noise going through the building and triggers music ducking / priority on the mixer or amplifier.
Zone buttons send the call to selected areas only — shop floor, warehouse, car park, restaurant — instead of every speaker in the building. Single-zone mics suit a small site; four-, six- or eight-zone stations suit schools, hotels and multi-wing buildings. The mixer or VA controller must support the same zone scheme.
Condenser paging and gooseneck mics often need phantom power from the mixer or amplifier. Dynamic paging mics usually do not. Check the product page and the input you will plug into before you assume a spare mic socket will work.

That is a function of the mixer or mixer-amp, not of the microphone alone. The paging input needs priority / talkover enabled. Many commercial mixer-amps expect a PTT contact as well as the mic audio — use the cable and input the manufacturer intended.
Use a mic station from the same range as the mixer-amp or VA controller where possible (Cloud, Bosch Plena, TOA, RCF and similar). A generic dynamic mic may work on a spare mic input but will not give zone select or the correct priority contact.
