Column (or column-cabinet) loudspeakers use several drivers in a slim vertical box. They are specified where speech must stay clear in large or reverberant spaces - churches, halls, transport hubs, shopping centres and public buildings - and they also handle background or foreground music. The tall format also blends into architecture better than a wide box cabinet, working well on pillars and other structural supports.
A typical cabinet fires a wider vertical beam, so more energy hits the floor and ceiling and comes back as echo. A column’s stacked drivers give a tighter vertical pattern and longer throw, which cuts those reflections and keeps voices intelligible further down the room. Use cabinets for near-field BGM on a wall; use columns when distance and reverberation are a problem.
Yes. Many models are dual-mode (for example Bosch LA1-UM20E-1 / LA1-UM40E-1, Audac KYDO/B, RCF CS3082). Others are 100V-only (Apart COL-41, Penton MCS20T/ENC, CES Audio COS-3200) or low-Z only (LD Systems SAT 442 G2 at 8 ohms). Match the speaker to the amplifier output and do not mix 100V and 8 ohm loads on the same channel.
Specify EN54-24 when the column is part of a voice-alarm or emergency paging system. Examples in this range include the Bosch LA1-UM series and Penton MCS20T/ENC. Standard BGM columns are not a substitute for certified life-safety loudspeakers.
Yes — check the IP rating. Water-resistant or waterproof columns here include Bosch LA1-UM20E-1 (IP65), Penton MCS20T/ENC (IP55) and CES Audio COS-3200 (IP66). More drivers and a taller cabinet generally mean tighter vertical control and more throw. Compact 20–30 W 100V columns suit shorter naves and corridors; Higher powered models and low-Z column speakers (eg SAT 442 G2) suit larger halls or higher music level. Aim the column at ear height and keep it off highly reflective walls where possible.
Most are supplied with a wall bracket so the cabinet hangs vertically and can be angled slightly toward the seating. Mount high enough to clear heads, keep cable entries pointing down on IP-rated models, and use the manufacturer’s fixings — a tall slim cabinet is a lever on the wall. Some designs also work in pairs to cover a wide nave.
Yes for architecture. White columns disappear nicely on painted plaster (SAT 442 G2 W and many worship/install models); black suits dark halls and stages (SAT 442 G2, Audac KYDO/B). Match the grille to the wall rather than to the amplifier rack!
