It is a matched transmitter and receiver so a presenter can move without a cable. Systems in this category are complete kits — handheld, beltpack with lavalier, or headset — for schools, offices, hotels, gyms, worship spaces and small theatres. The receiver feeds a mixer, mixer-amp or DSP.
A handheld suits speeches and Q&A when the user can hold the mic. A lavalier (tie clip) on a beltpack is discreet for presenters. A headset stays in place for fitness instructors and anyone who talks while moving. The receiver is the same idea; the capsule is what changes.
Licence-free systems usually run on Channel 70 (863–865 MHz), 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz. Licensed UHF (often Channel 38 or interleaved spectrum) needs an Ofcom licence and is better when you need more simultaneous mics or a cleaner band. Always check current UK rules for your site before you standardise a frequency.
2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz are licence-free and simple to deploy, but 2.4 GHz shares space with Wi-Fi. 5.8 GHz is often less crowded. UHF generally gives more range and more simultaneous channels in a busy building. Choose digital 2.4/5.8 GHz for small rooms; choose planned UHF for multi-mic events.
That depends on the band and the room. Licence-free Channel 70 only supports a handful of systems. 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz have their own practical limits. Licensed UHF scales further if frequencies are coordinated. Dual-channel receivers pack two mics in one rack unit; they still count as two radio links.
Expect tens of metres in a clear room; walls, racks and a full audience reduce that. Receivers work best in line of sight of the transmitter. If the rack is in another room you may need remote antennas. “100m range” on a datasheet is not a guarantee through masonry.
Typically a working day on good alkalines or a charged pack, depending on the transmitter. Fit new or freshly charged batteries before an event and keep spares. Some systems use rechargeable packs and drop-in chargers — useful when mics are used every day.
Yes. The receiver’s line or mic output goes into a mixer, matrix or mixer-amp input. Enable priority/ducking if the mic must override BGM. Do not treat a general wireless mic as the certified fire-evac microphone on a voice-alarm system unless the specification says so.
Use a wireless mic when the talker moves around. Use an installed gooseneck or boundary mic when they stay at a lectern or table. Many rooms need both: a lectern mic plus a wireless handheld mic for Q&A.
