They are PA loudspeakers certified for use where flammable gas or combustible dust may be present. Ordinary commercial speakers are not acceptable in those atmospheres due to potential microscopic electrical sparks at wire connections, switches, or terminals during normal operation or because of minor internal faults. This range covers explosion-protected horns and aluminium ceiling speakers for life-safety and public-address use.
IP rating only describes dust and water ingress. It does not certify that the speaker will not become an ignition source. Ex-rated models carry ATEX and/or IECEx approval for defined zones. An IP65 patio cabinet is not a substitute for a Zone 1 or Zone 21 loudspeaker.
They are the main certification schemes for equipment in explosive atmospheres (ATEX for Europe, IECEx for many international projects). The certificate defines the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class. Always match the speaker’s marking to the site’s hazardous-area classification — and check the individual product page for the exact standards.
Products in this range are offered for Zone 1 and Zone 2 (gas) and Zone 21 and Zone 22 (dust), depending on the model. The zone is set by the site’s hazardous-area assessment, not by the audio installer alone. Specify the zone, gas group and temperature class before you select a horn or ceiling speaker.
Yes. Typical ratings here are 6 W to 25 W on 100V line, so they integrate with industrial PA and voice-alarm amplifiers. Size the taps and cable as you would any 100V circuit, using hardware and glands approved for that location.
Horns give high output and throw for plant areas, yards and offshore decks. Aluminium Ex ceiling speakers suit indoor process or marine spaces where a horn would be too harsh or visually intrusive. Music quality is secondary; speech intelligibility and certification come first.
MED (Marine Equipment Directive) versions are intended for vessels and offshore installations that need marine type approval as well as Ex certification. Use them where the specification calls for both, such as ship PA and certain platform systems. Confirm MED marking on the product page.
Most horns in this range are also highly weather-sealed (typically IP66/IP67) and built from corrosion-resistant materials for chemical, salt and offshore exposure. Ceiling types may have a lower IP rating and belong indoors. Treat weather and Ex certification as two separate requirements that both must be met.
The hazardous-area classification and equipment selection should be agreed with the site’s responsible engineer and a competent installer familiar with ATEX/IECEx practice. Audio coverage still matters, but the certificate and zone matching come before brand preference.
