It is a digital unit that routes any input to any output and processes the signal on the way — EQ, delay, dynamics, and often networking. It sits between sources and amplifiers and is the control brain for multi-zone shops, hotels, offices, schools, gyms and venues.
A pre-amp mixer mainly combines mics and music with simple zone routing. A matrix DSP adds per-zone EQ, delay, compression, scene recall and often Ethernet or Dante. Use a pre-amp mixer for a straightforward BGM rack; use a matrix when routing and processing get more complex.
A graphic EQ only shapes frequency response, with several bands per channel, for room correction or feedback control. A DSP matrix can include EQ plus routing, crossovers, limiters and network control. A standalone graphic EQ is still useful in front of a live PA; it does not replace a multi-zone processor.
It is DSP dedicated to protecting and aligning loudspeakers: crossovers, limiters, delay and EQ for each output. Typical use is a performance or club system with separate subs and tops. Automatic echo cancellation (AEC) reduces the room echo that appears on a far-end call when loudspeakers and microphones are in the same space. Specify AEC on processors used for hybrid meetings; it is not required on a simple shop BGM matrix.
Count sources (mics, media players, paging, fire interface) and destinations (amplifier zones or network endpoints), then leave spare I/O. A small site may only need a handful of analogue channels; a shopping centre or hotel often needs a larger matrix or Dante expansion.
