A VA amp is an EN54-compliant amplifier for life-safety public address and voice evacuation. It must deliver clear emergency messages and can also carry day-to-day paging and background music. Typical sites are shopping centres, airports, schools, offices, hotels and factories.
A commercial 100V slave amp is built for BGM and paging, not for certified evacuation. VA amplifiers sit in an approved system with fire-interface, zone routing, monitoring and (where required) standby power. Using a general-purpose amp can invalidate the voice-alarm design.
EN54 is the European fire-system standard family. Voice-alarm control and indicating equipment (including VA amplifiers), is covered by EN54-16, whilst EN 54-24 covers loudspeakers used in voice alarm systems. Always check the product page for the exact approval.
A VA power amplifier mainly drives the 100V (or 70V) speaker lines. A system management unit adds zone selection, message playback, fire-panel inputs and paging control — often with built-in amplification. Large sites add routers and extension amplifiers to grow zones without replacing the master.
Yes. Many PAVA racks use the same certified amplifiers for BGM and announcements until an emergency message takes priority. Music quality is secondary to intelligibility. Keep emergency override and fire interfaces as specified — BGM must never block an evacuation message.
Add the speaker taps on each monitored circuit, include spare capacity for the design SPL, and follow the system manufacturer’s battery and heat calculations. Common sizes in this range are around 120 W, 240 W and 480 W per amplifier or zone group. Undersizing leaves no margin when every zone is called at once.
A router adds extra loudspeaker zones and control contacts to an existing VA controller. An extension amplifier adds more 100V power when the master chassis is out of watts. Use them to expand a certified family (Bosch, TOA, RCF and similar) rather than mixing unrelated commercial amps onto the EVAC bus.
Most VA power amps are 100V/70V line, which suits long, monitored speaker circuits. Some also offer a low-impedance output. Evacuation speakers themselves should be EN54-24 certified — a standard ceiling speaker on a VA amp is not a compliant circuit.
No. The fire panel (or other cause-and-effect system) tells the voice-alarm system when to broadcast. The VA amplifier and controller play the messages and drive the speakers. Integration is via approved contacts or interfaces, not by treating the amp as a fire-detection device.
