It is a slave amplifier that drives speakers at 2–16 ohms (most often 4 or 8 ohm). There is no mixer in the box — you feed it from a mixer, matrix or media player. Lo-Z amps are used where music quality and headroom matter: bars, restaurants, gyms, conference rooms, theatres and leisure venues.
Use Lo-Z when you have a small number of cabinets, short cable runs and you want fuller music. Use 100V when many speakers and long cables are the priority. Some install amps offer both Lo-Z and 70/100V — never load both types on the same channel.
A mixer-amp mixes mics and music and powers the speakers. A Lo-Z power amp only amplifies. Use a mixer-amp for a simple café PA. Use a separate Lo-Z amp when the mixer already exists or you need more power than a mixer-amp can give.
Match the speaker impedance (4 or 8 ohm) and keep the total load at or above the amp’s minimum rating. Two 8 ohm cabinets in parallel look like 4 ohm to that channel. Add the required wattage per speaker, then choose an amp with headroom so it is not driven into clip.
Bridge (bridged mono) combines two channels into one higher-power output, often used for a subwoofer. The minimum impedance usually rises (for example 8 ohm bridged instead of 4 ohm per channel). Only bridge if the manual allows it, and use the correct speaker terminals.
Power sharing lets the amp’s total wattage be split unevenly between channels. A quiet corridor can take less power so a gym or bar zone can take more, as long as the sum stays within the amplifier’s overall rating. On some models sharing is automatic; on others you set a cap per channel in software. It offers flexible distribution, but sometimes the power can only be shared across channel pairs – check the manual.
DSP adds EQ, crossovers and limiters in the amplifier — useful for aligning tops and subs or protecting cabinets. Dante brings the audio over the network instead of analogue cables. A straightforward stereo amp is enough for one room of BGM; DSP and Dante pay off on larger or multi-zone installs.
Class D is efficient: more power, less heat and often a smaller rack unit. That matters when the amp runs all day in a cupboard. Still leave ventilation space; “cooler than an old analogue amp” is not the same as “needs no airflow.”
Keep runs as short and as thick as practical. Low-impedance cables carry more current than 100V lines, so thin or long cable wastes power and dulls the bass. If the speakers are far from the rack, 100V line is usually the better architecture.
