Horn Speakers

Horn Speakers

Horn loudspeakers are a highly effective solution for delivering clear, high‑output sound over long distances, particularly in noisy or challenging environments. Designed for maximum speech intelligibility, horn speakers are widely used in public address systems where clarity, reliability and coverage are essential.

You’ll commonly find horn loudspeakers installed in factories, warehouses, distribution centres, car parks, transport hubs, sports grounds and outdoor public spaces. Their focused sound dispersion allows announcements to cut through background noise, making them ideal for paging, safety messages and emergency alerts.

Specialist options are available to suit demanding applications. Intrinsically safe horn speakers are designed for hazardous areas such as petrochemical plants or refineries, where explosive gases or dust may be present. EN54‑24 certified horns are suitable for voice alarm and life‑safety systems, ensuring compliance in emergency evacuation scenarios. IP‑rated horn speakers provide dependable outdoor performance, offering protection against water, dust and harsh weather conditions. Check the IP rating for suitability and if you need clarification please see the IP Rating Technical Guide in our Tech Hub.

While horns are traditionally associated with speech, music horns offer improved frequency response, making them suitable for mixed‑use systems where both announcements and basic music playback are required – these are often seen in Football grounds and Sports Stadia.

Available in 100V line formats, horn loudspeakers integrate easily into commercial sound systems, delivering powerful, dependable audio where it matters most.

FAQs

What are horn loudspeakers used for in a PA system?

Horn speakers project loud, clear speech over distance and through noise. They are the usual choice for factories, warehouses, distribution centres, car parks, transport hubs, sports grounds and outdoor public spaces where paging, safety messages and emergency alerts must cut through ambient noise.

When should I use a horn speaker instead of a cabinet speaker?

Use a horn when you need throw and intelligibility more than full-range music: long distances, high ambient noise, or weather-exposed sites. Use a cabinet or column when the job is background or foreground music in a room. A horn will sound thin on playlists; a small indoor cabinet will disappear in a noisy loading bay.

Are commercial horn speakers 100V line or low impedance?

Most horns in this range are 100V line so you can run long outdoor cables and many horns from one amplifier. Some compact horns are 8 ohm only. Check the product page before you size the amp: add the selected taps and leave headroom.

Are horn speakers suitable for outdoor and wet locations?

Yes — that is a main reason to specify them. IP-rated horns in this range typically sit between splash protection and fully weather-sealed (IP56–IP67). Aim the mouth slightly down, keep the cable gland at the bottom, and use the Tech Hub IP guide if you are unsure which rating you need.

What is an EN54-24 horn speaker and when is it required?

EN54-24 horns are certified for voice-alarm and life-safety systems. Specify them where the PA is part of an evacuation strategy, not just staff paging. A standard paging horn is not a substitute for a certified voice-alarm loudspeaker.

What is an intrinsically safe horn speaker?

It is a horn designed for hazardous areas such as petrochemical plants and refineries where explosive gas or dust may be present. These are specialist items with their own installation rules. Do not use a standard IP65 horn as a stand-in for an intrinsically safe model.

Can horn speakers play music as well as announcements?

Speech horns are tuned for voice. Music horns have a wider frequency response and are used where the same circuit must carry announcements and basic music — often used in football grounds and stadia. They will not replace a full-range performance cabinet for a club or bar.

How should horn loudspeakers be aimed and spaced?

Point the horn at the listening area, not at a nearby wall. Overlapping coverage slightly avoids dead spots in a yard or platform. Height and aim matter more than packing extra horns close together.

What power rating should I choose for a factory or car park horn?

Low-wattage 100V horns (around 6–15 W) suit shorter ranges and quieter sites. 20–30 W and above suit large sheds, car parks and sports grounds. Always set the transformer tap to the level you need, not automatically to the highest tap.

How do I get horn speaker advice from Commercial Audio?

Call 01663 767888 or email sales@commercialaudiosolutions.com with the site type (warehouse, car park, stadium, hazardous area), whether you need EN54-24 or only paging, and 100V or low-Z. We can match IP rating, tap and amplifier load for trade installs.
